Knox Central Panther Head Football Coach Scott Russell was named District Coach of the Year for the 2014 season. Russell’s team finished the season with an 8-3 record and captured their first district title in school history.
Coach Russell said about winning the honor, “A head coach is only as good as the assistants they have helping them. I would like to thank my coaches for all they have done this year. This is their award as much as mine. Long hours and hard work have been put in by all, and they deserve a lot of credit for their hard work.”
The Panthers started the season 3-0 with wins over Perry County Central, North Laurel and Harlan County before suffering a hard fought loss to non-district rival Bell County 15-6 on Sep. 19.
The Panthers bounced back with a highly contested battle the following week with a 33-28 win over Whitley County. On Oct. 3, Knox Central opened district play with an easy 42-8 victory over Clay County followed by a 26-7 win over Rockcastle County. The Panthers finished the sweep of the district with a convincing win at home on Oct. 24 over Russell County 41-12.
After suffering a loss to Corbin, Knox Central won their opening game of the region playoffs over Taylor County 21-12 before Boyle County handed the Panthers a season ending 44-13 loss on Nov. 14.
