The Barbourville Police Department held its annual Shop with a Cop Monday. Eighteen children began their day with a pizza lunch at the Barbourville Fire Department followed by a visit and pictures with Santa Claus.
Afterwards, the officers took the children to Wal-Mart and gave each of them $125 to spend on whatever they wanted. Several of the officers’ wives and children assisted with the children’s shopping trip.
“It’s amazing to see what some of these children shop for,” said Barbourville Police Chief Winston Tye. Some of them went straight to the toy department while others went clothes shopping. Still others went looking for gifts they could give to their parents and grandparents.”
The officers raised the money for this year’s shopping spree through donations from the community, as well as the officers themselves.
“It’s important that the community know that we’re here for the kids,” said Tye. “We want them to know that we’re not just the bad guys who arrest people.
“All we want is for the kids to have a good Christmas.”
