Classes dismissed for April 8 eclipse to allow students to experience the event with family

Tuesday’s special-called board meeting contained a plethora of fun events for grades preschool through kindergarten that will keep their students busy until summer vacation.

Before the fun, it was down to business. The first order was the 2024-2025 school year calendar, with the first tentative day being August 8 and the last tentative day being May 22, 2025. Once that was approved, the Board moved on to the faculty and staff payroll schedule.

Some teachers suggested the change, so faculty and staff will now be paid on the first of the month instead of the fifth.

The last and final business item concerned the short-term lease for Barbourville’s track team’s outdoor track. All were in favor of continuing the lease.

Before adjourning, Samantha Daniels, Barbourville Independent School FRYSC Director, named several exciting activities coming up.

“Friday is this year’s Dollars and Sense that we do with the Extension office every year, to try to help kids learn the value of the dollar and to manage their money,” Daniels said. She went on to say “Preschool and kindergarten enrollment is coming up on April 26.” Although the City School has a higher enrollment rate than in previous years, administrators are welcoming more and more.

This year, the school is also implementing a ‘Community Service Day’ for middle and high school students on May 17. FRYSC director Samantha Daniels explained, “This is to teach our youth the value of giving back, and sometimes you have to give in order to receive.”

“With their parent’s permission, students will be assigned a job in an area to work in for the day,” Daniels said. “It could be cleaning up garbage, or helping a small business but we just want them to learn how to give.”

Administrators at Barbourville Independent wanted to remind everyone that students will not have class on April 8 to experience the 2024 eclipse at home with their families. Classes will resume on April 9 on a regular schedule.
