Barbourville students honor late classmate

In a solemn Friday afternoon ceremony, Barbourville 7th and 8th grade students honored their late classmate, Jathan Patterson. Patterson tragically lost his life in an automobile accident on Feb. 23. Before releasing 60 multi-colored balloons, Jathan’s classmate, Thea Bailey, accompanied byBarbourville Choir Director SteveĀ Chafin, sang “Amazing Grace.” Another classmate, Bailey Lundy, led the students and guests in prayer.

Each balloon released held a personalized message or birthday wish for Jathan, who would have turned 14 today.

Following the ceremony at the school, Jathan Patterson’s family would presentĀ a check for $4,000 to the Knox-Whitley Animal Shelter in Jathan’s honor. The shelter, in turn, is planning to name the facility’s puppy room after Jathan, who was an advocate for all animals, both domestic and wild.
