Due to an increased number of complaints of black bear sightings in Knox County, Sheriff Mike Smith would like to make everyone aware of the danger involved and some precautionary measures should anyone encounter a bear.

The first and most important precaution a person should take is “Never Approach a Bear.” If a bear approaches you and you cannot avoid close contact, the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife recommends that you stand your ground, raise your arms to appear larger, and yell until it leaves the area.

They also recommend never run from a bear, this will trigger its natural instinct to chase. The Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife provides additional information regarding bear encounters on their website.

Black Bears are attracted to food sources such as garbage, pet food, livestock feed, bird feeders, barbecue grills and bee hives. If you see a black bear, Sheriff Smith recommends that you contact his office at 606-546-3181 or the Kentucky Department of Fish and Wildlife at 800-858-1549.
