The Union College baseball team dropped the final game of their three-game weekend set to No. 19 Davenport (Mich.) on Sunday at Jerry Carey Stadium, losing 17-5 to the visiting Panthers.
With the loss, the Bulldogs dropped to 0-3 on the young season, while Davenport improved to a perfect 3-0 with the victory.
Things started off fast for Union in the bottom of the first, as Ryan Horvath (SR/Detroit, Mich.) slapped an RBI single with two outs, scoring Zach Gross (JR/Bowling Green, Ky.) from third base to give the Bulldogs an early 1-0 lead over the Panthers.
Davenport, however, struck back in the top of the second, quickly knotting the game up at 1-1. The Panthers then added another run in the top of the fourth to make it 2-1, then three more in the top of the fifth, making the score 5-1 after four and a half innings.
The Bulldogs struck back in the bottom of the frame, adding two runs to cut the Davenport lead down to 5-3, as Gross and Nelson Price (SR/Burkesville, Ky.) scored on a Panther throwing error.
But, in the top of the sixth, Davenport exploded for 12 runs off the Bulldogs, effectively ending the game by taking an insurmountable 17-3 lead into the later innings.
Overall, Gross and Zach Dillman (SR/Cincinnati, Ohio) each had multiple hit games, with Gross going 2-for-4 and Dillman going 2-for-2.
On the mound, Davenport reliever Alex Schuilling earned the win (1-0), while Union starter Trey Alexander (SR/Glasgow, Ky.) (0-1) was credited with the loss.
The Bulldogs host Asbury (Ky.) in a doubleheader at Jerry Carey Stadium on Tuesday. First pitch for game one is set for 1 p.m.
