Bulldogs Sit in Third Place After Day One of Winter Invite

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – The Union College men’s and women’s swimming teams sit in third place overall after the first evening of the 2014 Union College Winter Invitational. The event is being held at the Stivers Aquatic Center.

For the men, Union collected 81 points on the first day of competition. The Bulldogs trail Cumberlands (Ky.) and West Virginia Tech in the overall race. Meanwhile, the Union women picked up 79 points while trailing Emory & Henry (Va.) and Cumberlands (Ky.).

In team relays, the women finished with a third place finsh in the 200-free relay with a time of 1:40.28, good enough for an NAIA “A” cut time. The men finished fourth in the 200-free relay with an “A” cut time of 1:30.14. In the longest event of the day, the women placed third in the 800-free relay with an “A” cut time of 7:55.53 while the men placed third with an “A” cut time of 7:00.99.

Individually for the men, Nathan Lethbridge (FR/London, Canada) picked up the only win on the day for the Bulldog men with a first place finish in the 100-free (46.23) an “A” cut time.  Bradley Moore (SO/Melbourne, Australia) place high in several events for the Bulldogs: second in the 200-back (1:52.60) and third in the 500-free (4:38.77) with both times earning “A” cut standards.

Dalton Baxter (SO/Woodstock, Ga. ) placed second in the 500-free with an “A” cut time of 4:38.67. Lucas Lucena (SO/Joinville, Brazil) finished fourth in the 200-back with an “A” cut time of 1:58.17.

For the women, Callie Harrigan (SR/Windsor, Canada) took first place in the 100-free with an “A” cut time of 51.26. The Harrigan win, was the only win of the day for the Bulldog women.

Lara Kaufmann (SO/Schwerte, Germany) finished second in the 500-free (5:14.76) an “A” cut time. Jule Stein (SO/Stuttgart, Germany) placed second in the 100-breast with an “A” cut time of 1:06.89 and placed fifth in the 200-IM for an “A” cut time of 2:17.15. Eliska Melicharova (SO/Upice, Czech Republic) finished in fourth place in the 200-back with an “A” cut time of 2:15.11.

The Union College Winter Invitational concludes tomorrow at the Stivers Aquatic Center with finals beginning at 5 p.m.
