The Union College volleyball team continued their winning ways in Appalachian Athletic Conference play on Friday night, rolling past host Truett-McConnell (Ga.) in straight sets (25-16, 25-18, 25-20).
With the victory, Union improves to 9-3 overall and 4-0 in AAC play. The Bulldogs have now won 12 straight AAC matches dating back to 2012. The loss drops the Bears to 3-5 on the season and 0-2 in conference play.
“We played a very scrappy and improved Bears team from last season in conference road opener,” said head coach Jeremy Wise. “We got the result we wanted in a 3-0 sweep, by executing well in the first two sets and then really buckling down in the last set. We played with great defense and decision making.”
Union was led by a 10 kills match from Marissa Elam (SO/Muncie, Ind.), who finished with a .348 hitting percentage. Rachel Andrews (SO/Louisville, Ky. ) finished with nine kills, while Julia Edmonds (JR/Burlington, Ky.) contributed eight kills.
Assisting in on the Bulldogs 40 kills was Chandler Gray (SR/Alexandria, Ky.). Gray finished with 21 assists in the match as well as 10 digs.
Leading the way for Union in the digs category was none other than Ana Calaza (SR/Rio de Janeiro, Brazil). Calaza finished with a match-high 18 digs, giving her 232 on the season. Summer Manning (SR/Taylor Mill, Ky.) finished with a 17 digs and Bella Salazar (SO/Arlington, Texas) added 12.
The Bulldogs continue their road trip through Georgia tomorrow, traveling to Reinhardt (Ga.) for another AAC-tilt. First serve is set for 1 p.m.
