The Knox Central Panthers and the Dewitt Lions competed at Knox Central Elementary Thursday evening. The two B (third and fourth grade) teams played first and the two A (fifth and sixth grade) teams played immediately after.
The third and fourth graders took the court first and Dewitt wasted no time in getting ahead early. Dewitt was up seven points, 8 to 1, but then the Panthers began to make a comeback. With less than thirty seconds left in the half, No. 12 for Dewitt sunk a three pointer to make the halftime score Dewitt: 11 Knox Central: 8. Throughout the second half, No. 12 for Dewitt continued to make three point shots and Cayden Collins for Knox Central scored several points for the Panthers. It was a very close game, but the Panthers defeated the Lions by two points. The final score of the game was Knox Central: 22 Dewitt: 20.
The fifth and sixth grade game was a close one from the start as both teams took turns dribbling from one end of the court to the other to score. The halftime score was Knox Central: 16 Dewitt: 15. With it being such a close game, the intensity picked up and teams got more aggressive as the game wore on. No. 20 for Dewitt scored a two point shot to just barely beat the buzzer, marking the end of the third quarter. All throughout the final quarter the atmosphere was undeniably exciting as cheers and screams from Dewitt and Central fans and cheerleaders filled the gymnasium. There was only three seconds left on the clock when Knox Central’s, Cayden Collins, made a three point shot to make the score 35 to 34 Dewitt. Collins was then fouled and took two free throws and successfully made the second to tie up the game 35 to 35. With 1.2 seconds left on the clock, No. 30 for Dewitt was fouled and awarded two free throws. He missed the first one, but made the second to put the Lions ahead 36 to 35. There was only one second left in the game when an argument broke out between the Knox Central coaches and the officials. Knox Central called a timeout and was given a technical, because according to the officials they were out of timeouts. Knox Central argued and claimed they still had one timeout left. After a discussion, Dewitt was awarded the ball. The Lions played the ball in and No. 30 for Dewitt received the ball in front of the net and scored two points to win the game. The final score was Dewitt: 38 Knox Central: 35.
The Dewitt Elementary cheerleaders and the Knox Central Elementary cheerleaders and dance teams put on several fantastic performances throughout the evening. During halftime of the B team game, Knox Central’s third and fourth grade cheerleaders cheered for the Panther fans in the crowd. In between the A and B team games, Knox Central’s preschool and kindergarten dance team performed a routine for the crowd to Taylor Swift’s “Shake It Off.” Shortly after, Knox Central’s first through third grade dance team danced to a creative mash-up of the Saved by the Bell theme song and High School Musical’s “We’re All In This Together.” After the first quarter of the A team game, the Knox Central fifth and sixth grade cheerleaders cheered for the crowd. During halftime of the A team game, Knox Central’s fourth through sixth grade dance team danced a routine to Mark Ronson’s “Uptown Funk.” The Dewitt Middle School Cheerleaders cheered for the Lions fans in between the third and fourth quarters of the A team game.
Knox Central Elementary will play again on Monday at Flat Lick Elementary and Dewitt Elementary will also play on Monday at Jesse D. Lay Elementary. The B team games will begin at 6 and the A team games will begin at 7.
