CHURCHES GEAR UP- Pastors train for the unthinkable

Churches are starting to take matters into their own hands when it comes to keeping their people safe.

In the wake of mass shootings in houses of worship across the country, Knox County Sheriff Mike Smith, Kentucky State Police Public Affairs Officer Shane Jacobs and Brian O’Brien with The Big One 106.3FM radio held a training clinic Tuesday evening at Barbourville’s First United Methodist Church, where about 20 local pastors came out to learn more about keeping thier congregations safe in the event a gunman or other terrorist were to incite a situation.

Some area churches are now under armed watch from members, while some communicate by walkie-talkie and taking precautions such as keeping doors locked and access to their facilities restricted when in use.

Another training session is being planned after the New Year at Community Harvest Tabernacle just off Hwy. 119 in the Calvin community in Bell County. More information will be made available as that training date comes near.
