The widening of Manchester Street has begun – or at least preparations have begun. Commuters along College and Manchester streets caught a glimpse Tuesday of the ‘old pool hall’ on the corner of Manchester and College streets being torn down. Next will be the old RL Gambrel furniture store directly in front and facing Main Street.

The demolition is in preparation for the Kentucky State Highway Department to come in and begin widening Manchester Street. Plans for the road construction include turning lanes, curve improvements, sidewalk construction and a storm sewer system.

The project is expected to continue down Manchester Street to the entrance of Judge Street.

The Kentucky Department of Transportation has a scheduled completion date of Nov. 15. The road is expected to remain open until May 15, at which time the contractor is allowed to close the road to all but local traffic until Aug. 15. At that time, the contractor is required to open the road and construct any remaining items using lane closures. The lane closures will utilize the newly-constructed three lanes so that there should be two-way traffic for the duration of the project.
