Knox man murdered-Firefighter honored with ‘last call’ at funeral

A Knox County family is mourning the loss of a son, brother, husband and father after his body was discovered early Friday morning.

Inmates with the Bell County Forestry Camp, a state correctional facility, under guard supervision, were on Hinkle Branch Road/Paynes Creek Road Friday doing roadside cleanup. There they discovered the body of Michael Sowders, 32, of Barbourville.

Upon calling Kentucky State Police Post 10, troopers arrived on the scene and blocked off the area to control the crime scene. Troopers determined in their preliminary investigation that Sowders had been murdered. A release on Monday, April 23 identified the cause of death as a gunshot.
