Knox teen dead after early morning crash

Kentucky State Police are investigating the death of a teenager around 2:30 a.m. Monday morning when a Barbourville police officer observed a 2008 Nissan Altima traveling on KY 3439 with no headlights. Before a traffic stop could be initiated, the vehicle went off the left hand shoulder of the roadway and overturned, ejecting both occupants.

The driver, a 13-year old juvenile, was pronounced dead at the scene by the Knox County coroner. The passenger, a 14-year old juvenile, was transported to the Knox County Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries. Neither driver nor passenger were wearing seatbelts at the time of the collision.

The collision is still under investigation by Master Trooper Mike Cornett. Also assisting at the scene were Captain Phillip Burnett, Tpr. Chad Gregory, Tpr. Frank Russell, Sgt. Jason Joseph, TFC Shane Jacobs, and the Barbourville Police Department.
