Tax season is upon us and getting a head start is proving to be beneficial. H&R Block recently began a national promotion contest, giving $1000 to 1000 people every day during the first month of tax season. Already, Knox County residents are reaping the rewards. Theresa Messer, of Hinkle, was the first in Knox County to receive the $1000 prize.

Ludina Collins of Flat Lick was the second winner from the Barbourville branch. Collins was presented the check by Robin Wells, Peggy Smith, Katelynn Knuckles, Glenna Ledford, Jeanette Smith and Jo Ann Cheek.

“We’ve never won anything before,” said Messer, “so, I didn’t believe my husband Gilbert when he called me at work to tell me we won!”

Messer isn’t the only winner out of the Barbourville H&R Block branch to win. As of Monday, two other winners have been confirmed.

Messer says she will put the money to good use.

“I’m going shopping for our daughter,” said Messer. “I want to give her the Christmas that we couldn’t give her this year.”

Anyone who files their taxes with H&R Block before Feb. 19, are automatically entered into the drawing.
