Hello, Knox County. I am Jessica Miller, and I am The Advocate’s new sports reporter. I am originally from Russell, KY where I grew up playing soccer for Greenup County Youth Soccer Association, Russell Middle School, Russell High School, and club teams such as The WV Rowdies and the Eastern Kentucky Futbol Club.
Then it was on to Union College for four years and the women’s soccer team, where I was thrilled to serve as one of the team captains in both my junior and senior years.
Soccer is “the beautiful game” but it is only one of many sports that are near and dear to my heart. I look forward to meeting and building relationships with all the coaches in the area and welcome anyone to call me with an interesting sports story.
While high school sports tend to be the heart and soul of a tight knit community such as Barbourville, I plan to expand The Advocate’s sports coverage far and wide. I am excited to cover high school sports, but I want to include the little guys. Look for me at elementary school sporting events and practices.
Additionally, I believe non-school sanctioned sports such as The Elite Gymnastics group and local body builders need their turn in the spotlight. And let’s not forget the fans. Don’t be surprised if the camera lens suddenly turns your way.
I’ll be capturing all the hype, drama, blood, sweat, and tears from inside the stadiums, courts, and fields. As readers, I hope you look forward to turning the page to the sports section and seeing photos and stories on all of Barbourville and Knox County athletes from young to old and from underdogs to all-stars.
Think you have a good sports story or an event I need to know about? Give me a call at 606-694-1646. I look forward to hearing from you.
