The Nation Guard post in Barbourville held its annual Family Day Sunday, Aug. 23, but this year was special.
Lisa Roark, Family Assistant Specialist for Ky National Guard Family Assistant Center, said, “This is Family day with a twist! Every year we have family day, but this year we wanted to honor the memory of Jonathan Roark who passed away in a car accident a few months ago.”
To honor his memory, the Guard organized a softball tournament, something that Jonathan was passionate about. Guardsmen from Barbourville, London and Williamsburg created five teams to compete in Sunday’s tournament.
Jessica Hibbard, 1-149th IN HHC Family Readiness Group Leader expressed her gratitude toward Union College for hosting the event, “Union has helped us with everything they could possible help with. They’ve let us use the baseball field and facilities. It turned out to be a great event”
“It’s drill weekend,” explained Fred DeRose, Leader FSC London, “So, instead of having to work the entire time, they get to come out here and relax with their families.”
