No. 23 Union Drops 78-76 Overtime Decision to Bluefield

BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – In a must win Appalachain Athletic Conference contest, the No. 23 Union College women’s basketball dropped a 78-76 decision to Bluefield (Va.), Saturday afternoon inside Robsion Arena.

The loss drops the Bulldogs to 17-7 overall and 14-4 in AAC play. With the win, Bluefield improves to 13-15 overall and 9-10 in conference action.

In the first half, the Bulldogs and Rams got off to a slow start offensively as the Bulldogs took a 12-7 lead with 10:30 remaining in the first-half.

Destiny Tolliver gave Bluefield their first lead of the game on a layup to give the Rams a 25-23 advantage with 2:58 until halftime.

Bluefield closed the first-half on a 10-4 run and went to the locker room with a 30-27 lead. Shelby Key led Bluefield and all scorers with 13 first-half points. Reagan King (SO/Hindman, Ky.) paced Union with seven points in the first-half.

The second-half saw the Rams come out hot as they extended their lead to 10 points (41-31) with 15:26 remaining in regulation.

Union battled back and a King three-pointer gave Union their first lead since the 4:40 mark in the first-half at 45-44 with 10:04 remaining in the second-half.

The Union lead was short lived as Bluefield regained the lead and the Bulldogs found themselves down 65-58 with 1:12 remaining in the second-half. The Bulldogs scored six straight unanswered points to pull within 65-64 of the Rams with 54 seconds on the clock in the second-half.

A Key free throw gave Bluefield a 66-64 lead with 25 seconds left in regulation. Union raced down the floor and Macy Clontz (JR/Lily, Ky.) found Lydia Nash (JR/Florence, Ky.) with one second on the clock as the Bulldogs sent the contest to overtime at 66-66.

Overtime looked to belong to Union, but a circus shot by Maryah Mazyck gave Bluefield a 77-75 lead with six seconds left on the clock as the Rams went on to take a 78-76 victory.

Union placed four scorers in double-figures, led by a game-high 20 points from Nash. King finished with 12 points while Angie Lawrence (SR/Brodhead, Ky.) and Nannilena White (FR/Frankfort, Ky.) contributed 10 points each.

Mazyck hit the game winning shot for Bluefield while finishing with 19 points and 10 rebounds.

The Bulldogs will be back action on Wednesday as they travel to Bryan (Tenn.) for their final AAC road tilt on the season. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m.
