The No. 25 Union College women’s basketball team dropped a 71-57 decision to Bryan (Tenn.) Thursday night, in a game that had major Appalachian Athletic Conference Tournament implications.
With the loss, Union drops to 17-8 on the season and 14-5 in AAC play. Bryan improves to 20-7 on the year and 14-5 in conference play.
From tipoff, the Bulldogs and Lions exchanged baskets with neither team pulling away early. Jenna Mills (SO/Barbourville, Ky.) gave Union an 8-7 lead with a three-pointer at the 15:50 mark in the first-half. The Mills basket would give Union their only lead in the contest.
The Lions controlled the rest of the half and closed out the first-half on a 9-0 run, taking a 38-25 lead into the locker room.
Mills led Union with nine first-half points, all coming off of three-pointers. Kristin Lane led Bryan with 14 points at intermission.
Bryan came out of the locker room rolling as they extended their lead to 44-30 six minutes into the second-half. The Bulldogs would spend the rest of the second-half playing catchup.
Haley Perkins (JR/Glasgow, Ky.) pulled the Bulldogs within 64-57 on a three-pointer with 3:20 remaining in regulation as Union looked to make a comeback.
The late spark by the Bulldogs proved not enough as they dropped a 71-57 decision to the Lions.
Perkins finished with a team-high 15 points and eight rebounds for the Bulldogs. Lydia Nash (JR/Florence, Ky.) finished with 14 points while Mills finished with 11 points.
Lane led the Lions with a game-high 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting.
Bryan forced 17 Bulldog turnovers and scored 13 points off of turnovers. The Lions outscored Union in second chance points 12-4, which proved to be a major factor in the second-half.
The Bulldogs are now tied for third place in the AAC standings with the Bryan. A Bryan win over Truett-McConnell (Ga.) and a Union win over Reinhardt (Ga.) on Saturday would lead to a three-way tie for second place.
Union will conclude the 2014-2015 regular season on Saturday with an AAC matchup against Reinhardt. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. with Senior Day activities beginning five minutes before tip.
