A long-time staple of Knox County is about to disappear.

Beginning Wednesday, June 24 at 7 a.m. the Kentucky Department of Transportation will be removing the narrow railroad underpass under the closed CSX Railroad line at California Hollow.

CSX no longer uses this branch and the rail was removed several years ago. The roadway will be safer for the traveling public, as well as reduce maintenance costs to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Another nearby (adjacent) underpass closer to U.S. 25E, under an active CSX line, will remain in its current configuration.

A portion of Manchester Street will be closed beginning Wednesday, June 24 at 7 a.m. and is expected to conclude on Wednesday, July 15.

This closure allows Department of Highway crews to remove the narrow railroad underpass under the closed CSX Railroad line at California Hollow. CSX no longer uses this branch and the rail was removed several years ago. The roadway will be safer for the traveling public as well as reduce maintenance costs to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet. Another nearby (adjacent) underpass closer to U.S. 25E, under an active CSX line, will remain in its current configuration.

The Kentucky Transportation Cabinet asks motorists to be aware of the work zone, expected long delays and to utilize safe driving habits when traveling through the area.

A DOT spokesman says the highway department will be sloping both sides back and restoring the road to its normal width.

The date, time, and duration of work may be adjusted if inclement weather or other unforeseen delays occur.
