BLUEFIELD, Va. – Union College guard Haley Perkins (JR/Glasgow, Ky.) finished with a game-high 22 points and 10 rebounds as the Bulldogs squeezed out a 54-50 victory at Bluefield (Va.) in Appalachian Athletic Conference women’s basketball action on Wednesday night.
With the win, Union improves to 9-4 on the season and 6-2 in AAC play. The loss drops Bluefield to 6-10 overall and 4-5 in conference play.
Bluefield jumped out to a 14-7 lead to open the contest. Union would tie the game on a Perkins layup and take a 16-14 lead on two Nannilena White (FR/Frankfort, Ky.) free throws with 12:12 remaining in the first-half. The
Bulldogs went on a 12-0 run after taking the lead and a Reagen King three-pointer extended the Bulldog lead to 24-14 with 9:33 left in the first-half.
The Bulldogs and Rams would exchange baskets heading into intermission as two Macy Clontz (JR/Lily, Ky.) free throws sent the Bulldogs to the locker room with a 32-24 lead. Perkins led all scorers with nine first-half points.
The second-half saw the Rams spend a majority of half chipping away at the Bulldog lead. A Shelby Key free throw pulled the Rams within 44-40 with 7:14 remaining in regulation, their smallest deficit since the 6:20 mark in the first-half.
Back-to-back three-pointers from Perkins and Clontz extended Union’s lead 52-44 with 4:44 left on the clock.
Bluefield answered back with six straight points to pull within 52-50 with just under two minutes remaining in regulation.
The Rams had opportunities to tie or take the lead, but turnovers and missed shots ended all hope as the Bulldogs took a 54-50 nail-biter.
Perkins filled up the stat sheet with a game-high 22 points, 10 rebounds, five steals and three assists. Clontz finished one rebound shy of a double-double with 11 points and nine rebounds. Lydia Nash (JR/Florence, Ky.) scored in the single-digit category for only the second time this season as she finished with nine points.
The Rams were led by Maryah Mazyck with 18 points and nine rebounds.
The Bulldogs will be back in action on Saturday when they host Bryan (Tenn.) in AAC play. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m. inside Robsion Arena.
