Six first half 3-pointers not enough as Lady Panthers fall to Whitley County, 43-57.

The Knox Central Lady Panthers dropped their third straight game last Tuesday with a twelve point loss to Whitley County.

Knox Central (12-7) was coming off losses to South Laurel, 61-57, and to Harlan County, 57-38.

Cassie Hale put the Panthers on the board first but Knox Central let the Colonels score six unanswered points to find themselves down by four at 2-6.

After a steal by Freshman Maddie Pennington, Hale notched the first of the Panthers six 3-pointers to pull the Panthers back within one at 5-6 at the 5:16 mark in the first quarter.

Whitley County (17-9) responded with five unanswered points to run the lead back to six before Junior Guard Melanie Gregory hit from behind the arch with 2:08 remaining in the first quarter.

Knox Central was down 11-17 when the buzzer sounded to end the first quarter.

The Panthers cut the deficit to three points, 24-27, at half time. Abigail Mills connected on two 3-pointers while Junior Guard Taylor Patterson notched a third three and Toni McCombs poured in four points in the quarter.

In the third quarter, the Panthers found themselves down by double digits at 31-41 with 2:09 left in the quarter. Knox Central’s Madison Hicks connected on the first of two free throws at the 2:00 mark and Taylor Patterson hit a three followed by a short jumper by Cassie Hale at the buzzer to cut the deficit down to six at the end of three.

The Panthers could not get any closer in the fourth quarter as the Colonel’s held Knox Central to just six points. The Panthers fell 57-43.
