A Barbourville man has been indicted for the murder of a volunteer firefighter in April.
A Knox County Grand Jury has indicted Sydney Smith, 28, of Sublimity Hollow Road, Girdler, in the death of 32-year-old Michael Sowders of Barbourville.
Smith has been in jail since the day of the murder, but for other charges. According to the arrest citation, Kentucky State Police troopers arrested Smith after entering his residence with his girlfriend. Smith hid behind a bed, and pointed a loaded shotgun in the direction of the troopers. His girlfriend was unnamed in the citation. It is unclear if at the time of Smith’s arrest he was a suspect in Sowders’ death.
