Stabbings at Dewitt: Postal employee, bystander save victim’s life

Two stabbings just 24 hours apart left a Knox County community rattled over the weekend.

During the first incident, a Dewitt Post Office employee and bystander are being heralded as heroes after recently saving a stabbing victim’s life.

On April 12 at approximately 9:50 a.m., Knox County Sheriff’s Deputy Claude Hudson responded to a fight in progress at Escoe’s Market parking lot in Dewitt. Once at the scene, Deputy Hudson found Jerry Smith, 37, of Flat Lick, on his side being treated by Knox EMS personnel for a severe laceration on his throat. Despite having lost a lot of blood, Smith was responsive and able to provide Deputy Hudson with a statement, accusing Brandon Bingham, 31, of Walker, of cutting his throat and then leaving the scene in a vehicle.

Seth Bingham, a Dewitt Post Office employee, did not see the initial altercation but said the afterward commotion caught his attention. Once Bingham assessed the scene and looked at the cut on Smith’s neck, he went into action, saving the victim’s life while waiting on first responders.
