Bubba was walking along an abandoned street while visiting the big city when a robber, gun in hand, stepped out from behind a van and demanded all his money.
“I’ll give you the money,” Bubba said, “but I’ll need you to shoot a few bullets into my hat to convince my wife I was actually robbed, that I didn’t just spend all my money.”
The robber obliged.
“While you’re at it, shoot a few holes in my coat,” Bubba said, laying it beside the hat. “I want her to be fully convinced.”
The robber obliged again.
“If you don’t mind, could you shoot a few holes in my backpack, too?”
“Sorry,” the robber said. “I’m out of bullets.”
“That’s what I wanted to hear,” Bubba said. “Now give me my money back before I beat you black and blue.”
I love stories about clever people, those who get the upper hand by using their brains. The Bible is filled with stories like that.
You may remember Gideon and his 300 men who defeated a massive Midianite army. They did it in a most unlikely way.
Under cover of darkness, Gideon and his men sneaked close to the Midianite army. They carried trumpets and clay plots with torches inside. On Gideon’s signal, they broke the pots, releasing the light of the torches, and they began blowing the trumpets. The enemy soldiers were so panicked by the noise and the light they actually killed each other trying to get away.
That unconventional warfare has been mimicked in the modern-day forces who use sound to frighten their adversaries. Some have used blaring music to unnerve the enemy. Others have played the terrifying sounds of a massive mechanized assault to frighten the opposition.
So, you see, tactics similar to those used by Gideon all those years ago still work today.
God gave us all brains. We might as well use them. It worked for Bubba. It will work for you..
