I got such a laugh out of the lady who said her husband, after 40 years of marriage, still gets upset when she uses his toothbrush.
“So,” she said, “if anyone knows a better way to get dog doo out of the soles of my sneakers, I’m all ears.”
Sometimes we step into messes because we don’t pay close enough attention to what may lie ahead. That’s true of dog doo, but it’s also true of other kinds of messes we can find ourselves in.
The Bible tells us, “Let thine eyes look right on, and let thine eyelids look straight before thee. Ponder the path of thy feet, and let all thy ways be established” (Proverbs 4:25-26).
If I had strictly adhered to that proverb throughout my life, I would have been able to avoid stepping in everything from chewing gum to cow manure. I would also have been able to avoid other kinds of messes in life.
Even our Bible heroes weren’t immune to getting into messes. The Bible tells us so.
Abraham was a liar. Moses was a murderer. Gideon was a coward. Sampson was a womanizer. David was an adulterer. The Apostle Peter denied Christ three times in one night. The list goes on.
They were all imperfect people, just like us. They all had a knack for stepping into messes, just like us. They sinned, just like us. But, through God’s grace, all made it to heaven.
Here’s the good news for all of us: God loves us so much that he sent his only begotten son, Jesus, down to earth to live among us, to teach us important lessons, and ultimately to die for us on the cross. You see, the Bible tells us the wages of sin is death. Jesus took our sin upon himself and died in our place, paying our sin debt. In doing so, he showed us such amazing grace. He showed us saving grace.
“For by grace are ye saved through faith; and that not of yourselves: it is the gift of God: Not of works, lest any man should boast (Ephesians 2:8-9).
You can’t do enough good deeds to be saved. You can’t donate enough money to be saved. You can’t be kind enough to be saved. You’re saved by God’s grace. It is a free gift.
The messes you’ve gotten into in life have sure enough soiled you, but the blood shed by Jesus at Calvary cleanses you from all unrighteousness.
Your husband’s toothbrush, no doubt, works well cleaning your shoes but only the blood of Christ will wash away your sins.
