Time to dig out out the old gardening gloves and work boots.
Earth Day is Wednesday, April 22. To get head start on the celebration, Union College Outdoors, Spiritual Life and Barbourville Tourism are sponsoring a Thompson RV Park and River Cleanup on Tuesday, April 21.
“This is the kickoff to Earth Day,” said Sean Trinque, head cycling coach at Union College and Earth Day advocate. “We also want to encourage people to clean up their own yards and streets.”
Volunteers are reminded to wear a pair of shoes you don’t mind getting wet or dirty. It would also be advisable to wear a pair of work gloves if mud, muck and trash are not your favorite things to hold. Even an arm extension grabber will be helpful.
Everyone will meet at the boat launch behind the RVs at 3 p.m. Trash bags, water and snacks will be provided before and during the cleanup. There will also be a cookout in the park at the end of the cleanup.
Signups for both individuals and groups are still being taken. If you would like to sign up for the cleanup or have any questions, please call Barbourville Tourism at 545-9674.
“Even if you haven’t signed up before the 21st, that’s OK,” said Trinque. “We can use all the help we can get. Just drop by anytime and grab a trash bag. If you can’t stay all day, come when you want and leave when you’re done. We’ll still be grateful to you for your help.”
