BARBOURVILLE, Ky. – If school spirit could be quantified in weights and measurements, Union College’s centerpiece comes in at a hefty 10,000 pounds. That, at least, is what a new Union College Spirit Rock tips the scales at.

On April 23, the five-ton monolith was delivered to the Union College campus and placed on the lawn between the Student Center and Black Technology Center. The spirit rock was a project of the 2014-2015 Student Government Association.

SGA President Michael Davenport said the project was initiated last year as a way to increase campus pride and bring the campus community closer together.

“The spirit rock represents how strong our campus community is,” Davenport said. “SGA believes this spirit rock will give students a chance to express themselves and their groups in a positive manner. In a sense, the spirit rock serves as a symbol of unity for all members of the Union College community.”

The rock is intended for use by various members of the Union College community including athletic teams, campus clubs, organizations and academic programs to help increase campus pride and awareness for events, Davenport added. By late Friday afternoon, the spirit rock had already undergone its first paint job.

The spirit rock was donated to Union College by Jimbo Hall of J. Hall, Inc. of Gray, Ky. Hall and his crew delivered the rock to campus and arranged for its placement on the student center lawn.

The unveiling of the spirit rock took place with SGA officers, President Marcia Hawkins, Union staff members and Board of Trustees members looking on.

“We never have to worry about someone stealing our school spirit,” said President Hawkins. Hawkins “tweeted” the occasion and posed for a photo with the SGA officers.

The 2014-2015 SGA body consists of Michael Davenport, President; Briana Patel, Vice-President for Student Development; Caleb Spurlock, Vice-President for Business Affairs; Kimberly Alexander, Vice-President for Athletics; Rebeka Griffith, Vice-President for Academic Affairs and Ellie Weaver, Vice-President for Public Relations.
