Coach Simpson sees “Excellent progress”
The Barbourville Lady Tigers welcomed the North Laurel Jaguars to their home last Thursday night. The Tigers struggled moving the ball under a tough North Laurel defense and fell to the Jaguars, 28-67.
Head Coach Brandon Simpson knew this year would be a struggle with only one senior, Taylor Logan, to lead his squad. “We get a little better by the day, and that was our main goal this season,” said Simpson.
The Tigers allowed North Laurel to score 11 unanswered points before Anna Daniels connected with 3:11 remaining in the first quarter for a nine point deficit. The Jaguars scored the next 15 points to end the quarter with a 2-26 advantage.
The second quarter saw the Tigers continue to struggle on the offense end of the court.
Jehan Abuzour scored on two free throw attempts followed by a basket by Daniels. The Tigers managed a single free throw by freshman Kaylee Smith and a short jumper by Taylor Logan to end the half 9-43.
Barbourville scored 19 points in the second half but fell to the Jaguars 28-67.
Coach Simpson said after the game, “”I was pleased the way we came out in the second half. I was worried the bad start would cause us to have our heads down, but our girls play with a lot of heart. They don’t quit. The third quarter was one of our better quarters of basketball all season.”
Even though the Lady Tigers have only won one game this season, Simpson remains optimistic about his young squad. “We are progressing very well. We are really young and dealing with a lot of injuries. We are really missing Whitney Brown, who is out with a knee injury. We need to have someone step up and be able to score for us. Like I said, though, we are making excellent progress.”
Anna Daniels led the Tigers on the scoreboard with 10 points followed by Shelbie Jones’ five. Abbagail Smith and Peyton Erslan each had three while Jehan Abuzour, Jordyn Smith and Taylor Logan shot for two points. Kaylee Smith hit one free throw for a point to finish out the scoring.
