Absentee ballots available starting Sept. 19

Posted

Kentucky voters who are unable to cast their ballots on Election Day or during early voting can begin requesting absentee ballots Saturday as the Nov. 3 general election approaches.

The state’s online portal for requesting absentee ballots will be open from Sept. 19 through Oct. 20. Eligible voters may request a ballot through the Kentucky Secretary of State’s website at https://vrsws.sos.ky.gov/abrweb or call the Knox County Clerk’s Office at 606-546-3568 to have a ballot mailed to them.

The deadline for absentee ballots to be returned is 6 p.m. Tuesday, Nov. 3. Ballots may be returned by mail or in person to the secure ballot box at the Knox County Clerk’s Office.

The U.S. Supreme Court on Monday, Sept. 14, rejected an effort by President Donald Trump’s administration to change how mail ballots are handled by the U.S. Postal Service.

The administration sought to implement a new rule that would require state and local election officials to upload lists of mail voters to a portal and use special barcodes on ballot envelopes to make mailed ballots easier to track.

The Supreme Court rejected the administration’s request, with Justices Samuel Alito and Clarence Thomas dissenting.

Justice Brett Kavanaugh wrote that while the new rule may have been within the power of the Postal Service, “state and local election officials do not have sufficient time to reasonably implement the rule before the elections.”

For Kentucky voters who qualify, excused in-person absentee voting will take place Oct. 21-23 and Oct. 26-28.

In-person, no-excuse absentee voting, commonly referred to as early voting, will take place Oct. 29-31. Election Day is Tuesday, Nov. 3.

Knox County will offer two locations for early, no-excuse absentee voting. Polls will be open from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. on those dates at Knox Central High School’s gymnasium in Barbourville and Sacred Heart Catholic Church’s gymnasium in Corbin.

On Election Day, Knox County voters will have 12 voting locations available. Registered Knox County voters may cast their ballots at any of the locations between 6 a.m. and 6 p.m. Nov. 3.

Voting locations are Artemus Volunteer Fire Department; Chapel Grove Baptist Church at Wilton; Dewitt Elementary gym; Flat Lick Elementary gym; Girdler Elementary gym; G.R. Hampton Elementary gym; KCEOC Community Action; Knox Central High School gym; Knox County Middle School gym; Lynn Camp Middle/High School gym; Sacred Heart gym on Master Street in Corbin; and Salt Gum Baptist Church Fellowship Hall.
