The Barbourville Town & Country Homemakers welcomed Dr. Kara Kratzer, Au.D., a board-certified doctor of audiology with Southeast Kentucky Specialty Clinic in Corbin and Somerset, for an informative program on hearing health at their recent meeting
Dr. Kratzer shared an overview of the different types of hearing loss, explaining how conditions such as sensorineural, conductive, and mixed hearing loss affect individuals in distinct ways. She discussed common causes, early warning signs, and the importance of timely evaluation - especially as hearing changes can often occur gradually.
Members also learned about the variety of hearing aids available today, including behindtheear, intheear, and rechargeable digital models equipped with advanced features like Bluetooth connectivity and backgroundnoise reduction. Dr. Kratzer emphasized that modern hearing aids are more discreet, customizable, and effective than ever before.
The presentation offered practical guidance on when to seek a hearing test, how to care for hearing devices, and ways to support loved ones experiencing hearing challenges. President Lee Wolff and members expressed appreciation for the clear, helpful information and the opportunity to ask questions directly to a local specialist.
The Town & Country Homemakers continue to host educational programs that support wellness, lifelong learning, and community engagement.
