With winter weather expected to begin overnight, City and County officials provided a final update on forecasted conditions and local preparations, warning Barbourville residents to expect a mix of snow, ice, and freezing rain as the system moves into the area early Sunday morning.
In a special-called meeting with City and County officials, officials provided insight into updated weather conditions, stating that between 12:00 a.m. and 6:00 a.m., locals in Barbourville should expect snow and ice ranging from 0.15 to 0.4 inches on Saturday night into Sunday morning. According to weather updates, freezing rain is expected to start early Sunday morning, with the possibility of warmer winds transitioning it to rain. These conditions are expected to continue into Monday evening. While all weather updates are issued with medium confidence by local weather stations and are subject to change, officials assure locals that there is an abundance of safety precautions and support countywide.
Officials added that a warming station will open at 12:00 p.m. tomorrow at First Baptist Church and in the courthouse lobby. Preparations for salting on frequented and local roadways have already begun. Local emergency services are equipped with tested, proper equipment, along with generators and vehicles that can withstand the conditions in the event of an emergency.
In closing, officials urge locals to contact emergency services in the event of an emergency, to avoid travel if possible, and to stay updated on social media for any updates throughout the weekend.
