It was a great day for Knox County as nearly $100 million in projects were announced as part of the new state budget that was approved and sent to Governor Andy Beshear for approval. In a press conference on Friday, April 5, 2024 at the Knox County Courthouse before a Senate President Robert Stivers, along with State Representative Tom O’Dell Smith, Judge-Executive Mike Mitchell and Chief Circuit Court Judge Gregory Lay announced projects that will affect the lives of thousands of Knox Countians for generations to come. Among the funds announced, key amounts include a total of $3.9 million for the Knox County Sports Complex and RV park project, $8.5 million for a new county government office complex to occupy the former North Main Street branch of Commercial Bank (former main office for Union National Bank), and $53 million for a new courthouse. The funding also included $1.5 million to the City of Barbourville to help finish the new fire department and City Hall construction projects. Also during the press conference, Ted Hampton, Executive Director for Cumberland Valley Electric, was honored for his 60 years, as of April 5, in his position, making him the longest-serving Executive Director of a rural electric cooperative in the nation, and in the history of rural electric co-ops.
