September 05, 2024

During September, healthcare providers, the public, and organizations come together to raise awareness of sepsis, the leading cause of death in U.S. hospitals.
Sepsis is the body’s overwhelming and life-threatening response to infection, which can lead to tissue damage, organ failure, and death. Sepsis is a national health crisis affecting 1.7 million people and taking approximately 270,000 lives every year in the US. Sepsis is a medical emergency that can be difficult to diagnose, but requires urgent attention. Healthcare workers are the critical link to preventing, recognizing, and treating sepsis.
Through public education, we can raise awareness of the signs and symptoms of sepsis to people in our communities know when to seek emergency care.  Rapid diagnosis and treatment of sepsis can save lives and improve outcomes for sepsis survivors, as the risk of mortality from sepsis increase by 4 to 9% for every hour treatment is delayed.
Baptist Health Corbin will host a Proclamation signing for Sepsis Awareness Month with Corbin Mayor Suzie Razmus at 11:30 am on Monday, September 16 at the hospital.
