High Attendance Day is set for October 31 in KCPS

October 15, 2024

Following a week of closures and NTI days due to student safety, the Knox County Public Schools along with other districts in the region will participate in a postponed State High Attendance Day now set for October 31.
“While other districts kept the September 12 date, those impacted in our area will participate on October 31,” explained Gina Sears, Director of Pupil Personnel for Knox County and a board member of the Kentucky Association of Pupil Personnel.
Even after being postponed, the date is an exciting event for students in the Knox County Public Schools as they join schools across the district and Kentucky in a friendly competition to achieve the highest attendance rates. The rates from those districts that were closed on September 12 will use their October 31 attendance in the friendly competition.
Sponsored by the Kentucky Directors of Pupil Personnel, this event emphasizes the importance of regular school attendance.
The significance of regular attendance can’t be overstated. Research highlights that missing just 10 percent of school—equivalent to one or two days every few weeks—can hinder reading development, even in kindergarten. By the time students reach sixth grade, persistent absenteeism may signal a higher risk of dropping out of high school.
Knox County students are encouraged to show up and stand up as they recognize the importance of attendance in school and continuing into their future careers.
