UPDATE: Crash into Knox Courthouse results in fatality early Tuesday

An early morning car crash in Barbourville has claimed the life of one person.
Officers with the Barbourville Police Department were dispatched to the crash scene at 5:51 a.m. on Tuesday, January 14 to the Knox County Courthouse. A black sedan crashed into one of the Knox County Courthouse's front pillars at high speed.
Once at the scene, the driver, a 17-year-old male who has yet to be identified by police, was extricated from the vehicle and transported by Knox County EMS to Barbourville ARH Hospital, where he succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced deceased. The deceased was the only occupant of the vehicle. The identity of the deceased has not yet been released by law enforcement.
The investigation is ongoing by the Barbourville Police Department. They were assisted by Knox County EMS, Barbourville Fire Department, Knox County Emergency Management Director Mike Taylor, Knox County Sheriff's Office, and the Knox County Coroner's Office.
According to The Big One 106.3, Sheriff Mike Smith has said a structural engineer will check the courthouse's stability to ensure it is safe to enter. One of the front pillars was destroyed. It is currently unknown if the pillar is load-bearing.
