Warren named new KCPS Director of Transportation

Knox County Public Schools has named a new Director of Transportation, and it’s someone who knows the roads—and the responsibilities—better than most. After 13 years of service in the district’s transportation department, including seven years as manager, Greg Warren has been selected to lead the program that transports hundreds of KCPS students daily, covering thousands of miles.
A lifelong resident of Knox County and graduate of the school district, the new director brings more than a decade of hands-on experience and a heart for student safety.
“My wife and I, and our four children, all grew up here and attended KCPS,” he said. “I started in transportation as a bus driver, also working as a monitor when needed. I eventually became a driver trainer and later took on the manager role. I believe that working in each of these positions has prepared me well to serve as director.”
Under Warren's leadership, the department will continue to prioritize safety above all else. Weather conditions, road warnings, and affected areas are always carefully considered when making decisions about bus routes or cancellations.
“Safety is always first,” he emphasized. “The safety of our students and employees is the highest priority. Every student’s transportation needs play a vital role in their education, and we take that responsibility seriously.”
One of the department’s major improvements in recent years has been the installation of cameras both inside and outside of the buses.
“It’s made a huge impact on safety,” he explained. “We can now identify license plates, vehicle makes and models, timestamps, and locations. That information can be handed over to law enforcement when needed. It’s been a game-changer in protecting our students and drivers.”
As the new school year approaches, the transportation department is actively seeking substitute drivers and monitors, with full-time positions expected to be posted soon. Warren encourages interested community members to apply and become part of a team committed to student safety and success.
He also wants families and staff to know that his office door is open.
“I can always be reached at the bus garage for any questions or concerns. I look forward to continuing to serve KCPS in all of our transportation needs.”
