KCPS names Barton as new Director of Facilities

by Frank Shelton, KCPS Communications

Knox County Public Schools is pleased to announce the hiring of James (Eddie) Barton as the district’s new Director of Facilities. Barton brings more than two decades of leadership experience in the railroad and construction industries.  He joins the district during a time of renovations, replacements, and potential new projects, just a month before school resumes.
“I’m excited to join KCPS and honored to be named the Facilities Director,” Barton said. “I take pride in keeping things running smoothly and making sure the buildings and grounds are well maintained. Being part of the school system allows me to use my skills to support my community.”
With over 20 years of experience overseeing crews, maintaining large-scale infrastructure, and promoting safe, efficient operations, Barton plans to take a hands-on approach from day one. His first priority will be to tour all school buildings and grounds, meet with principals and maintenance staff, and identify top concerns and needs.
“Safety will be the foundation of all decisions,” Barton noted. “I want to get a clear picture of the current conditions and listen to those who know the facilities best. From there, we’ll be able to prioritize facility issues and address them efficiently.”
Barton also shared his long-term vision for the department: to create a proactive, responsive, and team-driven operation.
“My goal is to help build a reliable department that takes pride in keeping schools safe, clean, and fully operational,” he said. “I want to support my team by providing leadership, training, and the resources they need to grow and succeed.”
