City School Unveils New Career Discovery Labs Ahead of School Year
New learning opportunities are available for students at Barbourville City School when they return to classes soon. A new lab will help propel students toward several different career pathway options before they ever enter high school.
Career Discovery Labs will include focuses on 12 areas of learning: Alternative Energy, Computer Science, Design/Pre-Construction, Electrical, Engineering Environment & Ecology, Flight Principles, Forensic Science, Health Science, Manufacturing-Production, Nutrition & Wellness, and Robotics.
According to Paxton-Patterson Labs, the program is described as follows: “Pathways start with Career Discovery Labs™ by integrating everyday work with grade level math, science, reading, and critical thinking skills. These hands-on experiences align with career cluster skills and knowledge standards to help students discover their unique interests and talents. The setup is ideal for daily or weekly enrichment, after-school, and summer camps. Everything you need is included and organized for easy distribution and engagement.”
A total of 32 labs at Barbourville City School will benefit grades 5-9 with career pathway development.
In preparation for the new labs, the Barbourville Board of Education also approved remodeling and modernizing the restrooms in the middle and high school building.
“I am excited about our new Career Exploration Labs,” said Superintendent Dennis Messer. “The students are really going to benefit from them.”
